Our Neighbourhood Wardens are Oscar Johnson and Jordan Cornall-Saunders, who cover the whole of the unparished area, undertaking a number of activities supporting the community, working with the elderly, vulnerable, young people and schools. Wardens carry out high visibility foot patrols in the town and recreational areas to deter crime and anti-social behaviour. The Neighbourhood Councils are closely involved in setting priorities for the Wardens and recently supported the provision of E-bikes to enable them to patrol the area more effectively.
Whilst not being police officers themselves, they do work very closely with Horsham Police and feedback intelligence on the issues they come across around our area.
Based within the community, our Neighbourhood Wardens work alongside partner agencies to improve the quality of life for everyone and promote community cohesion and resilience. The Wardens undertake a number of activities, ranging from enforcement to community development.
Neighbourhood Wardens can help the community in the following ways:
- Meet the needs of the community and improve the quality of life for the residents, through engagement, promotion and support.
- Develop projects that benefit the local residents, to tackle community safety issues and promote inclusivity.
- Promote community cohesion, resilience and solidarity to encourage and empower communities to resolve issues.
- Support vulnerable members of the community with activities, advice, welfare checks and signposting.
- Engage with residents daily to get to know their local community and become a trusted friend to offer advice and guidance.
- Offer education and advice when required, before taking enforcement action.
- Contribute to the delivery of the Community Safety Partnership plan by working with other agencies.
- Provide a highly visible and reassuring uniformed patrolling presence.
- Provide an effective eyes and ears service aimed at reducing the fear of crime and improving quality of life.
- Work alongside the Police and submit reports regarding drug use, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.

Safeguarding
Safeguarding is a term used in the UK and Ireland to denote measures to protect the health, well being and human rights of individuals, which allow people to live free from abuse, harm and neglect.

Neighbourhood Watch
Many areas of Horsham operate Neighbourhood Watch Schemes. Check out the NHW website for more information and to join or start a NHW scheme for your road. As part of the NHW Scheme, Sussex Police Fraud Squad send out monthly updates on the latest fraud and scams to be aware of, and Horsham Police have weekly crime updates which are circulated via your local NHW street coordinator.

A New Way To Report Crimes And Information Across Sussex
Police Forces across England & Wales are using a new system called Single Online Home (SOH) – a policing portal which allows the public to easily report crimes, incidents and information online.
Using SOH significantly reduces wait times for those reporting crimes or incidents, or if you simply wish to provide some information to the police. Reporting online via SOH is easy and effective. It has been positively endorsed by a number of Neighbourhood Watch members who have had the opportunity to use it.
The new portal can be found on the home page of the recently updated Sussex Police website www.sussex.police.uk. In addition to the Report area, here you will find a new box “Tell us about …”. There is a drop down from which you can select, for example, “Something you’ve seen or heard”.
If reporting a crime or incident which has occurred in Sussex, SOH is available directly via https://sussex.police.uk/contact-us/report-online/. You can scroll further down that page to see other options.
If reporting a crime or incident which has occurred outside of Sussex, SOH is available via https://report.police.uk.

SOH should not be used for an emergency – dialling 999 remains the means of contact if there is danger to a person or if a crime is being committed. The police non-emergency phone number 101 remains available if personal contact is required.
All reports submitted via SOH will receive an immediate acknowledgement message. Reports are reviewed in live time, and within 48 hours Sussex Police will provide a personal response from a named staff member.
Neighbourhood Watch members are encouraged to use SOH when required and importantly, to promote and support its use amongst the communities we support through our NHW schemes. Co-ordinators are encouraged to pass on this information to their members, and of course to other members of the public.

Computer Hackers, Fraud and Scams
LATEST WARNING:
Watch out for these FAKE TalkTalk emails about a refund
Action Fraud has received over 100 reports in the last week about fake emails purporting to be from TalkTalk. The emails state that the recipient’s TalkTalk account is in credit and that they’re owed a refund. The links in the emails lead to malicious websites.
Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to messages that ask for your personal or financial details
Passwords
We all live more of our lives these days online – you are doing it right now reading this! This can leave us open to scams and fraudulent activity if we do not take some basic steps to protect ourselves and our data such as using difficult to crack passwords and virus protection software. Ransomware
Sometimes the hackers get lucky and try to take over your computer – holding it and your personal information on it to ransom. The idea is just the same as kidnapping. something of yours is taken and you only get it back (in theory) if you pay the ransom. Be Neighbourly
Also try to spare a thought for those around you who may be a little more vulnerable than you are. Perhaps they are elderly, on their own or have health issues or disabilities. All it takes is a minute or two of your time to just double check that they are okay every now and then too.
